Organization Specific Questions:

Who is eligible for funding from the Foundation?
Organizations that are tax-exempt from federal income taxation pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) and not classified as private foundations are eligible for funding. The Foundation does not provide grant support to businesses, individuals, or organizations with a pending 501(c)(3) status.

Additionally, the Foundation prefers to limit its funding to type II or III supporting organizations. If your organization has this classification, please contact the Foundation before submitting an application.

What is the Foundation's geographic focus area?
The Foundation focuses its funding on organizations that are based in and/or serve residents of Jackson, Clay, and Platte counties in Missouri, and Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas.

I am located just outside of Foundation's geographic boundaries, but I serve residents from that area. Is my organization eligible?
Generally, the Foundation asks that a significant number of your client population be from the five-county metropolitan area to be eligible.

Are there areas in which you don't make grants?
The Foundation does not generally support single-disease causes, publications, historic preservation, special events, animals, or sports.

Proposal Specific:

Can I communicate with someone to discuss a possible proposal?
Yes, we prefer that you discuss your request with staff prior to submitting the proposal. Please contact us at foundation@hrblock.com or 816.854.4361 to be directed to the appropriate staff person.

What types of projects does the Foundation like to support?
A major emphasis of the Foundation's giving is on activities that serve underserved, low-income individuals in our five-county service area. These activities must improve, expand, or strengthen an organization and its services. It is important to note the Foundation does not generally provide support for ongoing programming and operations.

Does the Foundation prefer to fund programs or capital?
We prefer you determine your highest priority.

Does the Foundation provide sponsorships?
The Foundation does not provide sponsorships for special events, telethons, dinners, or conferences.

What is the typical amount and duration of grants made by the Foundation?
The Foundation does not have set minimum or maximum grant amounts but the majority of grants is less than $50,000 and average approximately $20,000. Grant amounts are determined based upon the total cost of the project and the amount of funding the Foundation has available. The Foundation usually makes one-year grants, however, will consider multi-year requests when appropriate.

If my organization applies and is declined, will that hurt its chances in the future for receiving funds?
No, but your organization is limited to submitting one grant proposal per each 12-month period. If your organization has been declined in the past, you are welcome to contact the appropriate staff person to determine the extent to which your organization and request fits within the Foundation's funding priorities.

Proposal and Review Process:

When do you accept proposals?
The Foundation has four proposal deadlines per year that correspond with the Foundation's Board of Directors meetings. Please see the box on the right hand side of the Nonprofit Organization tab for our current grant deadlines.

How do I apply?
The Foundation currently utilizes an online grant application for all funding proposals. If you have any questions or difficulty filling out the online application, please contact us at foundation@hrblock.com or 816.854.4361.

Can I get a copy of the online application before I enter my information?
You will be able to print a copy as you are filling out the online application form. Click on the Printer Friendly Version link located in the top right hand corner of each application page.

When will I be contacted about the status of my proposal?
After you submit your application, you will receive an e-mail confirmation from the Foundation. After your proposal has been reviewed, you will receive notification indicating if your grant request has been approved or declined.

Questions Specific to Online Grant System:

Do I have to complete the application in one online session?
No, you can start the application and choose to save and finish it at another time. Just click on the "Save and Finish Later" button located at the bottom of each application page.

Is my application automatically saved once I create an account?
No, your application is not saved automatically. To ensure application data is not lost, please click on the "Save and Finish Later" button at the bottom of each application page.

How do I return to an incomplete application that I have saved but have not yet submitted?
Once you create an online grant application account, you will receive an e-mail notification that includes the e-mail address and password required to access your saved application. Please add foundation@hrblock.com to your e-mail address book (or friendly senders) to ensure these messages arrive to your inbox. Where do I forward my online proposal?
Once the application is completed online, you will need to click the "Review & Submit" button at the bottom of the last page of the application to submit your application electronically on the Internet. Once your application has been submitted, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you used to create your online grant application account.

Is my internet browser compatible with the online grant application?

Yes, the online applications place a cookie on your computer to enable the "Save and Finish Later" functionality. Please check the user's manual for your internet browser to enable cookies if you receive an error message.
